Years of detailed assessment, analysis and planning helped confirm the scale and scope of the Channel Deepening Project, at the same time pinpointing the exact area to be deepened – an area that in total makes up around 1% of Port Phillip Bay.

Better knowledge and protection of the bay

Before work on the Channel Deepening Project began, Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) learned vast amounts about Port Phillip Bay.
PoMC carried out one of the most exhaustive environmental assessment processes ever seen in Australia, spending more than $120 million on scientific research and exploratory studies.
