Years of detailed assessment, analysis and planning helped confirm
the scale and scope of the Channel Deepening Project, at the same time
pinpointing the exact area to be deepened – an area that in total makes up
around 1% of Port Phillip Bay.

Before work on the Channel Deepening Project began,
Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) learned vast amounts about Port
Phillip Bay.
PoMC carried out one of the most exhaustive environmental
assessment processes ever seen in Australia, spending more than $120
million on scientific research and exploratory studies.

and general cargo port. Handling around 36% of the nation’s container
trade with more than 3500 commercial ship calls to the port each year, the
port provides access to more than 300 ports of call across the
globe.
